Expulsion from Persia

"The Shah's edict, equivalent to an order for the immediate expulsion of Bahá'u'lláh from Persian territory, opens a new and glorious chapter in the history of the first Bahá'í century." (Shoghi Effendi 1)

"Explicit orders had been issued by the Sultan and his ministers to subject the exiles, who were accused of having grievously erred and led others far astray, to the strictest confinement. Hopes were confidently expressed that the sentence of life-long imprisonment pronounced against them would lead to their eventual extermination. The farman of Sultan 'Abdu'l-'Aziz, dated the fifth of Rabi'u'th-Thani 1285 A.H. (July 26, 1868), not only condemned them to perpetual banishment, but stipulated their strict incarceration, and forbade them to associate either with each other or with the local inhabitants. The text of the farman itself was read publicly, soon after the arrival of the exiles, in the principal mosque of the city as a warning to the population." (Shoghi Effendi 2)

"On the morning of the 2nd of Jamadiyu'l-Avval 1285 A.H. (August 21, 1868) they all embarked in an Austrian-Lloyd steamer for Alexandria, touching at Madelli, and stopping for two days at Smyrna, where Jinab-i-Munir, surnamed Ismu'llahu'l-Munib, became gravely ill, and had, to his great distress, to be left behind in a hospital where he soon after died. In Alexandria they transhipped into a steamer of the same company, bound for Haifa, where, after brief stops at Port Said and Jaffa, they landed, setting out, a few hours later, in a sailing vessel, for 'Akka, where they disembarked, in the course of the afternoon of the 12th of Jamadiyu'l-Avval 1285 A.H. (August 31, 1868)." (Shoghi Effendi 3)

Arrival in 'Akka

"The arrival of Bahá'u'lláh in 'Akka marks the opening of the last phase of His forty-year long ministry, the final stage, and indeed the climax, of the banishment in which the whole of that ministry was spent." (Shoghi Effendi 4)

The Barracks

"During the imprisonment in the barracks, visitors were rigidly excluded. Several of the Bahá'ís of Persia came all the way on foot for the purpose of seeing their beloved leader, but were refused admittance within the city walls. They used to go to a place on the plain outside the third moat, from which they could see the windows of Bahá'u'lláh's quarters. He would show Himself to them at one of the windows and after gazing on Him from afar, they would weep and return to their homes, fired with new zeal for sacrifice and service." (Esselmont 5)

"His arrival at the penal colony of 'Akka, far from proving the end of His afflictions, was but the beginning of a major crisis, characterized by bitter suffering, severe restrictions, and intense turmoil, which, in its gravity, surpassed even the agonies of the Siyah-Chal of Tihran, and to which no other event, in the history of the entire century can compare, except the internal convulsion that rocked the Faith in Adrianople. 'Know thou,' Bahá'u'lláh, wishing to emphasize the criticalness of the first nine years of His banishment to that prison-city, has written, 'that upon Our arrival at this Spot, We chose to designate it as the "Most Great Prison." Though previously subjected in another land (Tihran) to chains and fetters, We yet refused to call it by that name. Say: Ponder thereon, O ye endued with understanding!'" (Shoghi Effendi 6)

"Having, after a miserable voyage, disembarked at 'Akka, all the exiles, men, women and children, were, under the eyes of a curious and callous population that had assembled at the port to behold the 'God of the Persians,' conducted to the army barracks, where they were locked in, and sentinels detailed to guard them. 'The first night,' Bahá'u'lláh testifies in the Lawh-i-Ra'is, 'all were deprived of either food or drink . . . They even begged for water, and were refused.'" (Shoghi Effendi 7)

Sudden Tragedy

"To the galling weight of these tribulations was now added the bitter grief of a sudden tragedy-the premature loss of the noble, the pious Mirza Mihdi, the Purest Branch, `Abdu'l-Bahá'í twenty-two year old brother, an amanuensis of Bahá'u'lláh and a companion of His exile from the days when, as a child, he was brought from Tihran to Baghdad to join his Father after His return from Sulaymaniyyih. He was pacing the roof of the barracks in the twilight, one evening, wrapped in his customary devotions, when he fell through the unguarded skylight onto a wooden crate, standing on the floor beneath, which pierced his ribs, and caused, twenty-two hours later, his death, on the 23rd of Rabi'u'l-Avval 1287 A.H. (June 23, 1870). His dying supplication to a grieving Father was that his life might be accepted as a ransom for those who were prevented from attaining the presence of their Beloved." (Shoghi Effendi 8)

"At this very moment . . . My son is being washed before My face, after Our having sacrificed him in the Most Great Prison. Thereat have the dwellers of the Abha Tabernacle wept with a great weeping, and such as have suffered imprisonment with this Youth in the path of God, the Lord of the promised Day, lamented. Under such conditions My Pen hath not been prevented from remembering its Lord, the Lord of all nations. It summoneth the people unto God, the Almighty, the All-Bountiful. This is the day whereon he that was created of the light of Bahá has suffered martyrdom, at a time when he lay imprisoned at the hands of his enemies." (Bahá'u'lláh 9)

"Lauded be Thy name, O Lord my God! Thou seest me in this day shut up in my prison, and fallen into the hands of Thine adversaries, and beholdest my son (The Purest Branch) lying on the dust before Thy face. He is Thy servant, O my Lord, whom Thou hast caused to be related to Him Who is the Manifestation of Thyself and the Day-Spring of Thy Cause.

"At his birth he was afflicted through his separation from Thee, according to what had been ordained for him through Thine irrevocable decree. And when he had quaffed the cup of reunion with Thee, he was cast into prison for having believed in Thee and in Thy signs. He continued to serve Thy Beauty until he entered into this Most Great Prison. Thereupon I offered him up, O my God, as a sacrifice in Thy path. Thou well knowest what they who love Thee have endured through this trial that hath caused the kindreds of the earth to wail, and beyond them the Concourse on high to lament.

"I beseech Thee, O my Lord, by him and by his exile and his imprisonment, to send down upon such as loved him what will quiet their hearts and bless their works. Potent art Thou to do as Thou willest. No God is there but Thee, the Almighty, the Most Powerful." (Bahá'u'lláh 10)

House of 'Abbud

What is now known as the House of 'Abbud in 'Akka is in two parts: the eastern part, which was the house of 'Udi Khammar, and the western part, which was the house of 'Abbud himself.

The eastern section was so insufficient to the needs of Bahá'u'lláh and His family that no less than thirteen persons had to be accommodated in one of its rooms.

Bahá'u'lláh had one room of the eastern section to Himself, and it was there that He revealed His Book of Laws, the Kitáb-i-Aqdas (circa 1873). During the period of His stay in the House of 'Udi Khammar, a group of Bahá'ís, defying Bahá'u'lláh's specific command, murdered three Azali Covenant-breakers who had been sent to 'Akka with the exiles. The animosity and slander against the Bahá'ís after this incident reached such a pitch that their children were stoned on sight, while 'Abbud himself, whose residence was next door to that of Bahá'u'lláh, was so influenced by what he heard against his now suspected Neighbour, that he reinforced the partition that separated the two dwellings.

At a later date, when the animosity of 'Abbud towards the Bahá'ís had been overcome, he learned that the wedding of `Abdu'l-Bahá was being delayed because of lack of accommodation. He therefore provided a room, situated between the two sections of the house, for the marriage of `Abdu'l-Bahá and Munírih Khánum. Subsequently, 'Abbud turned over the western part of the house to the Bahá'ís. Bahá'u'lláh then gave His room in the eastern part to `Abdu'l-Bahá, and occupied one of the rooms of the western section, which pilgrims now visit.

Bahá'u'lláh stayed in both parts of this house and in nearby houses for approximately seven years. During the latter years of His life, He also occasionally visited this house.

After the Ascension of Bahá'u'lláh, `Abdu'l-Bahá continued to stay in that house, and it was while He was there that the rebellion of the Arch-Breaker of His Father's Covenant began.

The Guardian refers to this house as "SCENE PROLONGED AFFLICTIONS SUSTAINED FOUNDER FAITH AS WELL AS SUPREME CRISIS SUFFERED BY `Abdu'l-Bahá AT HANDS COVENANT-BREAKERS." (Shoghi Effendi 11)

Kitáb-i-Aqdas

"Revealed soon after Bahá'u'lláh had been transferred to the house of

'Udi Khammar (circa 1873), at a time when He was still encompassed by the tribulations that had afflicted Him, through the acts committed by His enemies and the professed adherents of His Faith, this Book, this treasury enshrining the priceless gems of His Revelation, stands out, by virtue of the principles it inculcates, the administrative institutions it ordains and the function with which it invests the appointed Successor of its Author, unique and incomparable among the world's sacred Scriptures." (Shoghi Effendi 12)

Khan-i-'Avamid

At the time of the transfer of Bahá'u'lláh, His family and His companions from the barracks to make room for the Turkish troops, most of His companions were consigned to a caravansarai, named the Khan-i-'Avamid (Inn of the Pillars). The Bahá'ís lived mostly in the western and southern wings of the caravansarai on the top floor. One of the rooms was occupied by the Master, where He entertained guests and pilgrims and also prepared them for attaining the presence of Bahá'u'lláh.

Ridvan Garden

"Shaykh 'Aliy-i-Miri, the Mufti of 'Akka, had even, at the suggestion of

`Abdu'l-Bahá, to plead insistently that He [Bahá'u'lláh] might permit the termination of His nine-year confinement within the walls of the prison-city, before He would consent to leave its gates. The garden of Na'mayn, a small island, situated in the middle of a river to the east of the city, honoured with the appellation of Rid.van, and designated by Him the 'New Jerusalem' and 'Our Verdant Isle,' had, together with the residence of 'Abdu'llah Pasha-rented and prepared for Him by `Abdu'l-Bahá, and situated a few miles north of 'Akka-become by now the favourite retreats of One Who, for almost a decade, had not set foot beyond the city walls, and Whose sole exercise had been to pace, in monotonous repetition, the floor of His bed-chamber." (Shoghi Effendi 13)

"He is God, Glorified be He, Grandeur and Might are His!

"On the morning of the blessed Friday we proceeded from the Mansion and entered the Garden. Every tree uttered a word, and every leaf sang a melody. The trees proclaimed: 'Behold the evidences of God's Mercy' and the twin streams recited in the eloquent tongue the sacred verse 'From us all things were made alive.' Glorified be God! Mysteries were voiced by them, which provoked wonderment. Methought: in which school were they educated, and from whose presence had they acquired their learning? Yea! This Wronged One knoweth and He saith: 'From God, the All-Encompassing, the Self-Subsistent.'

"Upon Our being seated, Rad.iyih, upon her be My glory, attained Our presence on thy behalf, laid the table of God's bounty and in thy name extended hospitality to all present. In truth, all that which stimulateth the appetite and pleaseth the eye was offered, and indeed that which delighteth the ear could also be heard as the leaves were stirred by the Will of God, and from this movement a refreshing voice was raised, as if uttering a blissful call inviting the absent to this Feast. God's power and the perfection of His handiwork could enjoyably be seen in the blossoms, the fruits, the trees, the leaves and the streams. Praised be God who hath thus confirmed thee and her.

"In brief, all in the Garden were recipients of the choicest bounties and in the end expressed their thanksgiving unto their Lord. O that all God's beloved would have been present on this day!

"We beseech God, exalted be He, to cause to descend upon thee at every moment, a blessing and a mercy and a measure of divine grace from His presence. He is the Forgiving, the All-Glorious.

"We send greetings to His loved ones, and supplicate for each one of them that which is worthy of mention and is acceptable in His presence. Peace be upon thee, and upon God's sincere servants. Praise be to Him, the Lord of all mankind." (Bahá'u'lláh 14)

Mansion of Mazra'ih

"Bahá'u'lláh loved the beauty and verdure of the country. One day He passed the remark: 'I have not gazed on verdure for nine years. The country is the world of the soul, the city is the world of bodies.' When I heard indirectly of this saying I realized that He was longing for the country, and I was sure that whatever I could do towards the carrying out of His wish would be successful. There was in 'Akka at that time a man called Muhammad Pasha Safwat, who was very much opposed to us. He had a palace called Mazra'ih, about four miles north of the city, a lovely place, surrounded by gardens and with a stream of running water. . . . I got the house at a very low rent, about five pounds per annum, paid him for five years and made a contract. I sent labourers to repair the place and put the garden in order and had a bath built. I also had a carriage prepared for the use of the Blessed Beauty. . . ." (`Abdu'l-Bahá 15)

"In March 1973 the Universal House of Justice cabled further good news: 'OCCASION NAW-RUZ 130 JOYOUSLY ANNOUNCE Bahá'í WORLD ACQUISITION BY PURCHASE MANSION MAZRA'IH.'(17a) It was acquired from a descendant of 'Abdu'llah Pasha, thereby adding immeasurably to the Bahá'í endowments in the Holy Land. And in September 1980 land at the north-eastern corner of the Mansion was purchased to provide additional garden space, as recorded in the cablegram:

Mansion of Bahji

"Greetings and salutations rest upon this mansion which increaseth in splendour through the passage of time. Manifold wonders and marvels are found therein, and pens are baffled in attempting to describe them." (The dedicatory statement of 'Udi Khammar placed over the lintel upon completion of the mansion in 1870)

This large and imposing building, which covers an area of over 740 square metres, was built about 1870 (over an old one-story structure built many years previously) as a summer palace for 'Udi Khammar, a prosperous merchant of 'Akka and the original owner of the eastern half of what is now known as the House of 'Abbud. The owners fled during an epidemic, and in 1879 the Mansion was rented and later purchased as a residence for Bahá'u'lláh.

It was situated on a piece of elevated land crossed by the aqueduct which brought water from the springs at Kabri to 'Akka. 'Abdu'llah Pasha, the governor of 'Akka, had a mansion immediately to the south, now known as the Baydun mansion. The whole area was known as "Al-Bahja", or "Place of Delight".

Several rooms on the upper floor are of particular interest to Bahá'ís. The southeastern room was occupied by Bahá'u'lláh. In it He received visitors, including the distinguished orientalist Professor Edward Granville Browne, whose account of the meeting is familiar to many Bahá'ís. The south-western room was used by Shoghi Effendi during the times he stayed and worked at Bahji. The two small rooms at the centre of the north end of the Mansion are interesting. The one on the left contained for many years the library of the noted Bahá'í scholar Mirza Abu'l-Fadl, until it was transferred to the International Bahá'í Library for preservation under more favourable conditions. The one on the right contains the original gravestones of the Purest Branch and of the Mother of `Abdu'l-Bahá, as well as her original coffin, placed there by the Guardian when he transferred their remains from 'Akka to new graves at the base of the Arc on Mount Carmel in Haifa. Decorating the interior of the Mansion are numerous photographs, paintings, newspaper clippings, and other materials placed there by the Guardian.

The Turkish primitive paintings above the windows on the outside of the building are of no particular significance, but are considered to be fine examples of such work of the period.

Of the walls surrounding the Mansion, the one to the south is completely original and includes, at its eastern end, a small room which is the tomb of

'Udi Khammar and the step which Bahá'u'lláh used to mount His steed. The western wall is original as far as the gate.

Bahji

THE HARAM-I-AQDAS - In 1952, after owners of the land neighbouring the Mansion of Bahji fled the Holy Land and their properties were expropriated by the Israeli government, Shoghi Effendi exchanged parcels of land near the present village of Ein Gev, on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee, for a large tract of land and some buildings surrounding the Mansion and the Shrine. He immediately laid out a large garden, in the shape of a quarter-circle, to the north and west of the Mansion, focusing on the Shrine of Bahá'u'lláh. He called it the "Haram-i-Aqdas" (The Most Sacred Precincts).

THE PILGRIM HOUSE AND THE ROOM OF THE MASTER - Denied access to the Mansion, `Abdu'l-Bahá rented this building in 1892 from Nasif Hawwa, one of the heirs and a relative of 'Udi Khammar. Shoghi Effendi obtained title to the property in 1952 in the same transaction which included the lands surrounding the Mansion and Shrine.

THE MASTER'S TEA HOUSE - This small building, at the southern end of the gardens and just outside the wall of the Bayd.un estate, had been used by

`Abdu'l-Bahá to receive the friends-including the first Western pilgrims to visit the Holy Land in 1898. Shoghi Effendi obtained a long-term lease on the property in 1956, and the Universal House of Justice eventually purchased it.

THE GUARDIAN'S WORKROOM - The small building outside the quadrant of the Haram-i-Aqdas had been a utility building for Nasif Hawwa's olive groves. The Guardian rebuilt it, fitted the roof as a place from which he could observe the development of the gardens, furnished it with tables for his drawings and sketches and decorated its walls with maps.

THE COLLINS GATE - This beautiful wrought-iron gate was purchased in London by Shoghi Effendi with funds which had been given to him by Hand of the Cause of God Amelia Collins. It guards the main approach to the Shrine and the Haram-i-Aqdas, and the Guardian named it after Mrs. Collins.

TERRACES - When Shoghi Effendi obtained title to the large portion of the land and buildings surrounding the Shrine and the Mansion in 1952, he demolished many of the derelict structures and, in 1954 and 1955, used the material to construct the two lower tiers of the imposing terraces that adjoin the Haram-i-Aqdas on the east. The last Covenant-breakers were ejected on 6 September 1957 and in December, after the Guardian's passing, the Hands of the Cause demolished the last building-a large structure that spanned the northern end of the Mansion-and completed the terraces and landscaped them according to the Guardian's design.

THE EASTERN GARDENS - After arranging for the closing of a roadway that passed the Mansion on the east, the Universal House of Justice graded, developed, and fenced the property and laid out the northeastern garden in time for the Palermo Conference in 1968. The southeastern garden was planted in 1971.

THE NORTHERN GARDENS - Development of these gardens, spanning the walkway north of the Collins Gate, was begun in 1966 and is still under way.

THE SOUTH-WESTERN GARDENS - Portions of these gardens were planted in 1972 in the large olive grove that covers the area. Enough land to complete this final quadrant was obtained in September 1980.

THE OLD PINE GROVE - The large tree that remains just north of the western parking lot is all that remains of a large grove of native pines which provided a setting for picnics in the time of Bahá'u'lláh and `Abdu'l-Bahá.

Edward Granville Browne's Visit

The distinguished orientalist Professor Edward G. Browne of the University of Cambridge visited Bahá'u'lláh at Bahji in the year 1890, and recorded his impressions as follows:

". . . my conductor paused for a moment while I removed my shoes. Then, with a quick movement of the hand, he withdrew, and, as I passed, replaced the curtain; and I found myself in a large apartment, along the upper end of which ran a low divan, while on the side opposite to the door were placed two or three chairs. Though I dimly suspected whither I was going and whom I was to behold (for no distinct intimation had been given to me), a second or two elapsed ere, with a throb of wonder and awe, I became definitely conscious that the room was not untenanted. In the corner where the divan met the wall sat a wondrous and venerable figure, crowned with a felt head-dress of the kind called taj by dervishes (but of unusual height and make), round the base of which was wound a small white turban. The face of him on whom I gazed I can never forget, though I cannot describe it. Those piercing eyes seemed to read one's very soul; power and authority sat on that ample brow; while the deep lines on the forehead and face implied an age which the jet-black hair and beard flowing down in indistinguishable luxuriance almost to the waist seemed to belie. No need to ask in whose presence I stood, as I bowed myself before one who is the object of a devotion and love which kings might envy and emperors sigh for in vain!

"A mild dignified voice bade me be seated, and then continued: 'Praise be to God that thou hast attained! . . . Thou hast come to see a prisoner and an exile. . . . We desire but the good of the world and the happiness of the nations; yet they deem us a stirrer up of strife and sedition worthy of bondage and banishment. . . . That all nations should become one in faith and all men as brothers; that the bonds of affection and unity between the sons of men should be strengthened; that diversity of religion should cease, and differences of race be annulled-what harm is there in this? . . . Yet so it shall be; these fruitless strifes, these ruinous wars shall pass away, and the "Most Great Peace" shall come. . . . Do not you in Europe need this also? Is not this that which Christ foretold?. . . Yet do we see your kings and rulers lavishing their treasures more freely on means for the destruction of the human race than on that which would conduce to the happiness of mankind. . . . These strifes and this bloodshed and discord must cease, and all men be as one kindred and one family. . . . Let not a man glory in this, that he loves his country; let him rather glory in this, that he loves his kind. . . .'

"Such, so far as I can recall them, were the words which, besides many others, I heard from Beha. Let those who read them consider well with themselves whether such doctrines merit death and bonds, and whether the world is more likely to gain or lose by their diffusion." (18)

Shrine of Bahá'u'lláh

"The Qiblih is indeed He Whom God will make manifest; whenever He moveth, it moveth, until He shall come to rest." (Bahá'u'lláh 19)

"We have enjoined obligatory prayer upon you . . . When ye desire to perform this prayer, turn ye towards the Court of My Most Holy Presence, this Hallowed Spot that God hath made the Centre round which circle the Concourse on High, and which He hath decreed to be the Point of Adoration for the denizens of the Cities of Eternity, and the Source of Command unto all that are in heaven and on earth; and when the Sun of Truth and Utterance shall set, turn your faces towards the Spot that We have ordained for you. He, verily, is the Almighty and the Omniscient." (Bahá'u'lláh 20)

The room in which Bahá'u'lláh was laid to rest shortly after sunset on the day of His Ascension, 29 May 1892, had been the northernmost room in the home of His son-in-law, Siyyid 'Ali Afnan. Shoghi Effendi, as Head of the Faith, was awarded permanent custody of the Shrine in the early 1920s after a crisis precipitated by the Covenant-breakers who occupied the Mansion and the buildings adjacent to it. He improved the entrance of the Shrine and added the portico in 1940, and erected the carved oak door in 1957.

"Public access to the heart of the Qiblih of the Bahá'í World is now made possible through traversing the sacred precincts leading successively to the Holy Court, the outer and inner sanctuaries, the Blessed Threshold and the Holy of Holies." (Shoghi Effendi 21)

"The 'sacred precincts' referred to in this message are the properties of the Faith in Bahji, including the Mansion of Bahá'u'lláh to the east of the Shrine of Bahá'u'lláh and the gardens and landscaping surrounding the Shrine.

"The 'Holy Court' is the Haram-i-Aqdas, which consists of the landscaping and formal gardens providing a befitting approach to the Shrine as well as to the Mansion. This is sometimes referred to in the writings of the Guardian as the outer sanctuary of the Shrine. . . .

"The 'outer sanctuary' more specifically also refers to the small court with a small gate, a portico and a few steps leading to the entrance door of the inner sanctuary of the Shrine. . . .

"The 'inner sanctuary' is the roofed area consisting of a beautiful central garden, the surrounding paths of which are covered with rugs, and where the privileged pilgrims and visitors stand in prayer and view the 'Blessed Threshold' and 'the Holy of Holies,' where lies interred, in the words of the Guardian, 'the holiest dust the earth ever received into its bosom.'" (22)

House of 'Abdu'llah Pasha

This building derives its name from the governor of 'Akka who had occupied it in the early decades of the nineteenth century. It was the residence of `Abdu'l-Bahá for some thirteen years until he moved to Haifa, and it was here that He received the first pilgrims from the West on 10 December 1898. In the pilgrims' dining room in the House of 'Abdu'llah Pasha, `Abdu'l-Bahá gave the explanations which were compiled by Laura Dreyfus Barney during her pilgrimage from 1904 to 1906, and were later published as Some Answered Questions. The eastern end of the upper floor was the part of the house occupied by the members of the Holy Family. Off the large central hall of this wing is the room of Bahiyyih Khanum, the Greatest Holy Leaf, where the remains of The Báb were kept secretly for many years prior to being transferred to Mount Carmel.

During the most troublesome period in the Ministry of `Abdu'l-Bahá, poignant, dramatic and highly significant events occured in the House of 'Abdu'llah Pasha. It was from here that the Master directed the construction of the Shrine of The Báb on Mount Carmel, issued instructions for the restoration of the Holy House of The Báb in Shiraz, called for the erection of the first Mashriqu'l-Adhkar of the world in the city of 'Ishqabad, in Russian Turkistan, and built His house in Haifa. During these years He was subjected to the onslaught of the Covenant-breakers and the perils associated with the Committee of Investigation. Here He penned the first two parts of His Will and Testament, the Charter of the Administrative Order of the Faith.

After being out of the control of the Faith for many decades, the House of 'Abdu'llah Pasha was acquired by the Universal House of Justice in July 1974.

Mount Carmel

"In that same year Bahá'u'lláh's tent, the 'Tabernacle of Glory,' was raised on Mt. Carmel, 'the Hill of God and His Vineyard,' the home of Elijah, extolled by Isaiah as the 'mountain of the Lord,' to which 'all nations shall flow.' Four times He visited Haifa, His last visit being no less than three months long. In the course of one of these visits, when His tent was pitched in the vicinity of the Carmelite Monastery, He, the 'Lord of the Vineyard,' revealed the Tablet of Carmel, remarkable for its allusions and prophecies. On another occasion He pointed out Himself to `Abdu'l-Bahá, as He stood on the slopes of that mountain, the site which was to serve as the permanent resting-place of The Báb, and on which a befitting mausoleum was later to be erected." (Shoghi Effendi 24)

Shrine of The Báb

"The outermost circle in this vast system, the visible counterpart of the pivotal position conferred on the Herald of our Faith, is none other than the entire planet. Within the heart of this planet lies the 'Most Holy Land,' acclaimed by `Abdu'l-Bahá as 'the Nest of the Prophets' and which must be regarded as the centre of the world and the Qiblih of the nations. Within this Most Holy Land rises the Mountain of God of immemorial sanctity, the Vineyard of the Lord, the Retreat of Elijah, Whose return The Báb Himself symbolizes. Reposing on the breast of this holy mountain are the extensive properties permanently dedicated to, and constituting the sacred precincts of, The Báb's holy Sepulchre. In the midst of these properties, recognized as the international endowments of the Faith, is situated the most holy court, an enclosure comprising gardens and terraces which at once embellish, and lend a peculiar charm to, these sacred precincts. Embosomed in these lovely and verdant surroundings stands in all its exquisite beauty the mausoleum of The Báb, the shell designed to preserve and adorn the original structure raised by `Abdu'l-Bahá as the tomb of the Martyr-Herald of our Faith. Within this shell is enshrined that Pearl of Great Price, the holy of holies, those chambers which constitute the tomb itself, and which were constructed by `Abdu'l-Bahá. Within the heart of this holy of holies is the tabernacle, the vault wherein reposes the most holy casket. Within this vault rests the alabaster sarcophagus in which is deposited that inestimable jewel, The Báb's holy dust. So precious is this dust that the very earth surrounding the edifice enshrining this dust has been extolled by the Centre of Bahá'u'lláh's Covenant, in one of His Tablets in which He named the five doors belonging to the six chambers which He originally erected after five of the believers associated with the construction of the Shrine, as being endowed with such potency as to have inspired Him in bestowing these names, whilst the tomb itself housing this dust He acclaimed as the spot round which the Concourse on high circle in adoration." (Shoghi Effendi 26)

"In the same year that this precious Trust reached the shores of the Holy Land and was delivered into the hands of `Abdu'l-Bahá, He . . . drove to the recently purchased site which had been blessed and selected by Bahá'u'lláh on Mt. Carmel, and there laid, with His own hands, the foundation-stone of the edifice, the construction of which He, a few months later, was to commence. About that same time, the marble sarcophagus, designed to receive the body of The Báb, an offering of love from the Bahá'ís of Rangoon, had, at `Abdu'l-Bahá'í suggestion, been completed and shipped to Haifa." (Shoghi Effendi 27)

"Within a few months of the historic decree which set Him free, in the very year that witnessed the downfall of Sultan 'Abdu'l-Hamid, that same power from on high which had enabled `Abdu'l-Bahá to preserve inviolate the rights divinely conferred on Him, to establish His Father's Faith in the North American continent, and to triumph over His royal oppressor, enabled Him to achieve one of the most signal acts of His ministry: the removal of The Báb's remains from their place of concealment in Tihran to Mt. Carmel. He Himself testified, on more than one occasion, that the safe transfer of these remains, the construction of a befitting mausoleum to receive them, and their final interment with His own hands in their permanent resting-place constituted one of the three principal objectives which, ever since the inception of His mission, He had conceived it His paramount duty to achieve. This act indeed deserves to rank as one of the outstanding events in the first Bahá'í century." (Shoghi Effendi 28)

"When all was finished, and the earthly remains of the Martyr-Prophet of Shiraz were, at long last, safely deposited for their everlasting rest in the bosom of God's holy mountain, `Abdu'l-Bahá, Who had cast aside His turban, removed His shoes and thrown off His cloak, bent low over the still open sarcophagus, His silver hair waving about His head and His face transfigured and luminous, rested His forehead on the border of the wooden casket, and, sobbing aloud, wept with such a weeping that all those who were present wept with Him. That night He could not sleep, so overwhelmed was He with emotion." (Shoghi Effendi 29)

"'Every stone of that building, every stone of the road leading to it,' He, many a time was heard to remark, 'I have with infinite tears and at tremendous cost, raised and placed in position.' 'One night,' He, according to an eye-witness, once observed, 'I was so hemmed in by My anxieties that I had no other recourse than to recite and repeat over and over again a prayer of The Báb which I had in My possession, the recital of which greatly calmed Me. The next morning the owner of the plot himself came to Me, apologized and begged Me to purchase his property.'"

(`Abdu'l-Bahá, quoted by Shoghi Effendi 30)

"'The most joyful tiding is this,' He wrote later in a Tablet announcing to His followers the news of this glorious victory, 'that the holy, the luminous body of The Báb . . . after having for sixty years been transferred from place to place, by reason of the ascendancy of the enemy, and from fear of the malevolent, and having known neither rest nor tranquillity has, through the mercy of the Abha Beauty, been ceremoniously deposited, on the day of Naw-Ruz, within the sacred casket, in the exalted Shrine on Mt. Carmel. . . . By a strange coincidence, on that same day of Naw-Ruz, a cablegram was received from Chicago, announcing that the believers in each of the American centres had elected a delegate and sent to that city . . . and definitely decided on the site and construction of the Mashriqu'l-Adhkar.'" (`Abdu'l-Bahá, quoted by Shoghi Effendi 31)

"I cannot at this juncture over emphasize the sacredness of that holy dust embosomed in the heart of the Vineyard of God, or overrate the unimaginable potencies of this mighty institution founded sixty years ago, through the operation of the Will of, and the definite selection made by, the Founder of our Faith, on the occasion of His historic visit to that holy mountain, nor can I lay too much stress on the role which this institution, to which the construction of the superstructure of this edifice is bound to lend an unprecedented impetus, is destined to play in the unfoldment of the World Administrative Centre of the Faith of Bahá'u'lláh and in the efflorescence of its highest institutions constituting the embryo of its future World Order." (Shoghi Effendi 32)

Terraces of the Shrine of The Báb

"Carmel, in the Book of God, hath been designated as the Hill of God, and His Vineyard. It is here that, by the grace of the Lord of Revelation, the Tabernacle of Glory hath been raised. Happy are they that attain thereunto; happy they that set their faces toward it." (Bahá'u'lláh 33)

"This beautiful and majestic path, which extends from the Shrine of The Báb to the City of Haifa in line with the greatest avenue of that blessed city, which is adorned with trees and verdant paths and illumined with bright lights, which is the object of admiration of the people of this region and source of joy and pride to the authorities of this land, will subsequently be converted, as foreshadowed by the Centre of the Covenant, into the Highway of the Kings and Rulers of the World." (Shoghi Effendi 34)

"The beauty and magnificence of the Gardens and Terraces . . . are symbolic of the transformation which is destined to occur both within the hearts of the world's peoples and in the physical environment of the planet." (The Universal House of Justice 35)

"The gardens which surround that structure, in their rich variety of colors and plants, are a reminder that the human race can live harmoniously in all its diversity. The light that shines from the central edifice is as a beacon of hope to the countless multitudes who yearn for a life that satisfies the soul as well as the body." (The Universal House of Justice 36)

The inaugural events marking the official opening of the Terraces on Mount Carmel were held in May 2001.

Shrine of `Abdu'l-Bahá

"As to the funeral itself, which took place on Tuesday morning-a funeral the like of which Palestine had never seen-no less than ten thousand people participated representing every class, religion and race in that country." (Shoghi Effendi 37)

"The coffin containing the remains of `Abdu'l-Bahá was borne to its last resting-place on the shoulders of His loved ones." (Shoghi Effendi 38)

"Close to the eastern entrance of the Shrine, the sacred casket was placed upon a plain table, and, in the presence of that vast concourse, nine speakers, who represented the Muslim, the Jewish and Christian Faiths, and who included the Mufti of Haifa, delivered their several funeral orations. These concluded, the High Commissioner drew close to the casket, and, with bowed head fronting the Shrine, paid his last homage of farewell to `Abdu'l-Bahá: the other officials of the Government followed his example. The coffin was then removed to one of the chambers of the Shrine, and there lowered, sadly and reverently, to its last resting-place in a vault adjoining that in which were laid the remains of The Báb." (Shoghi Effendi 39)

"The interment of `Abdu'l-Bahá Himself within a vault of The Báb's mausoleum, enhancing still further the sacredness of that mountain; the installment of an electric plant, the first of its kind established in the city of Haifa, flooding with illumination the Grave of One Who, in His own words, had been denied even 'a lighted lamp' in His fortress-prison in Adhirbayjan; the construction of three additional chambers adjoining His sepulchre, thereby completing `Abdu'l-Bahá'í plan for the first unit of that Edifice; the vast extension, despite the machinations of the Covenant-breakers, of the properties surrounding that resting-place, sweeping from the ridge of Carmel down to the Templar colony nestling at its foot . . . these may be regarded as the initial evidences of the marvelous expansion of the international institutions and endowments of the Faith at its world centre." (Shoghi Effendi 40)

Haifa Pilgrim House

Soon after the entombment of the remains of The Báb, one of the believers from 'Ishqabad, Mirza Ja'far Rahmani, begged `Abdu'l-Bahá to allow him to build a Pilgrim House in the precincts of the Shrine for the convenience of visiting pilgrims. The request was granted, and this believer personally supervised the construction work, and paid for all expenses.

During the ministry of `Abdu'l-Bahá, many meetings were held in His Presence with the pilgrims and members of the local community. Later, when Shoghi Effendi became Guardian, he too met the assembled friends and talked to them in this Pilgrim House before leading them in prayer when visiting the Shrines of The Báb and of `Abdu'l-Bahá.

"The view from the Pilgrim Home is very attractive, especially as it faces the Blessed Tomb of Bahá'u'lláh. In the future the distance between 'Akka and Haifa will be built up, and the two cities will join and clasp hands, becoming the two terminal sections of one mighty metropolis. As I look now over this scene, I see so clearly that it will become one of the first emporiums of the world. This great semicircular bay will be transformed into the finest harbour, wherein the ships of all nations will seek shelter and refuge. The great vessels of all peoples will come to this port, bringing on their decks thousands and thousands of men and women from every part of the globe. The mountain and the plain will be dotted with the most modern buildings and palaces. Industries will be established and various institutions of philanthropic nature will be founded. The flowers of civilization and culture from all nations will be brought here to blend their fragrances together and blaze the way for the brotherhood of man. Wonderful gardens, orchards, groves and parks will be laid out on all sides. At night the great city will be lighted by electricity. The entire harbour from 'Akka to Haifa will be one path of illumination. Powerful searchlights will be placed on both sides of Mount Carmel to guide the steamers. Mount Carmel itself, from top to bottom, will be submerged in a sea of lights. A person standing on the summit of Mount Carmel, and the passengers of the steamers coming to it, will look upon the most sublime and majestic spectacle of the whole world.

"From every part of the mountain the symphony of 'Ya Baha'u'l-Abha!' will be raised, and before the daybreak soul-entrancing music accompanied by melodious voices will be uplifted towards the throne of the Almighty." (Quotation attributed to `Abdu'l-Bahá 41)

House of the Master

`Abdu'l-Bahá, Who was eager to complete the construction of the Shrine of The Báb, felt He should personally supervise the erection of the building to expedite the work. He therefore considered the possibility of establishing a house in Haifa where He could be near the building project.

Immediately after the completion of the house, He moved a part of the family, including the Greatest Holy Leaf and Shoghi Effendi, who was then a young boy, from 'Akka to the new home in Haifa. The Master joined them later.

When `Abdu'l-Bahá left the Holy Land in September 1910 and embarked upon His world travels, His family continued to live in this house. It was here that Shoghi Effendi grew up as an adolescent. It was this house which became `Abdu'l-Bahá'í official residence after His return to the Holy Land in 1913. It was here that He received the pilgrims, from East and West. It was here, after the war, that Shoghi Effendi served as his Grandfather's secretary. It is touching to recall that during this time the beloved Master often went to Shoghi Effendi's room at midnight and urged him to stop writing and to rest.

As one enters the House of `Abdu'l-Bahá, the room on the right is the one where He took His flight to the Abhá Kingdom. After Shoghi Effendi was appointed Guardian of the Faith, he continued the Master's practice of receiving guests in the room on the left.

The large central hall of the building is of special significance in that it was the venue of the gathering which heard the public reading of the Will and Testament of `Abdu'l-Bahá announcing the exalted office occupied by Shoghi Effendi as Guardian of the Faith, and also because it was the place where the first International Convention in 1963 elected the Universal House of Justice.

At the southwestern end of the garden adjoining this house, `Abdu'l-Bahá built a small structure, and He had the inner walls, the ceiling and the floor of one of its upper rooms covered with wood, as a protection against humidity. It was in this room that He slept at nights during the period immediately before His passing.

Resting Place of Amatu'l-Bahá Ruhiyyih Khanum

"For all whose hearts she touched so deeply, the sorrow that this irreparable loss brings will, in God's good time, be assuaged in awareness of the joy that is hers through her reunion with the Guardian and with the Master, Who had Himself prayed in the Most Holy Shrine that her parents be blessed with a child. Down the centuries to come, the followers of Bahá'u'lláh will contemplate with wonder and gratitude the quality of the services-ardent, indomitable, resourceful-that she brought to the protection and promotion of the Cause." (The Universal House of Justice 42)

In its tribute upon her passing, the Universal House of Justice characterized Amatu'l-Bahá Ruhiyyih Khanum's active life as "noble in its provenance," "crucial to the preservation of the Faith's integrity," and "rich in its dedicated, uninterrupted, and selfless service". (43)

Site of the future Mashriqu'l-Adhkar

"The site for the first Mashriqu'l-Adhkar of the Holy Land has been selected . . . situated at the head of the Mountain of God, in close proximity to the Spot hallowed by the footsteps of Bahá'u'lláh, near the time-honoured Cave of Elijah, and associated with the revelation of the Tablet of Carmel, the Charter of the World Spiritual and Administrative Centres of the Faith on that mountain." (Shoghi Effendi 44)

Joyously announce further developments World Center. After many years difficult negotiations erection obelisk marking site future Mashriqu'l-Adhkar Mount Carmel completed thus fulfilling project initiated beloved Guardian early years crusade.

10 Haparsim Street

This structure was built on one of the sites where Bahá'u'lláh pitched His tent. The plans for this building were drawn up at the request of `Abdu'l-Bahá and He modified them until they suited His requirements. The construction work began in His lifetime and finished at the time of the Guardian. Originally the building housed the Western pilgrims, and also (1951-1963) it served as the Seat of the International Bahá'í Council. Then (1963-1983) it was the Seat of the Universal House of Justice, and more recently (1983-2000) the Seat of the International Teaching Centre. Currently the Bahá'í International Community Secretariat and related offices occupy the premises.

4 Haparsim Street

This building served as a pilgrim house for the Western believers in the years immediately following `Abdu'l-Bahá'í return from travels in Europe and America. `Abdu'l-Bahá greeted the Western friends here. Amatu'l-Bahá Ruhiyyih Khanum related to pilgrims that she and her mother stayed in this house during their pilgrimage shortly after the passing of `Abdu'l-Bahá. It was here that she first met the beloved Guardian.

29. BLESSED REMAINS PUREST BRANCH AND MASTER'S MOTHER SAFELY TRANSFERRED HALLOWED PRECINCTS SHRINES MOUNT CARMEL... CHERISHED WISH GREATEST HOLY LEAF FULFILLED.

The conjunction of these three resting-places, under the shadow of The Báb's own Tomb, embosomed in the heart of Carmel, facing the snow-white city across the bay of 'Akka, the Qiblih of the Bahá'í world, set in a garden of exquisite beauty, reinforces, if we would correctly estimate its significance, the spiritual potencies of a spot, designated by Bahá'u'lláh Himself the seat of God's throne. It marks, too, a further milestone in the road leading eventually to the establishment of that permanent world Administrative Centre of the future Bahá'í Commonwealth, destined never to be separated from, and to function in the proximity of, the Spiritual Centre of that Faith, in a land already revered and held sacred alike by the adherents of three of the world's outstanding religious systems." (Shoghi Effendi 47)

"For such as might undertake, in the days to come, the meritorious and highly enviable pilgrimage to these blessed shrines, as well as for the benefit of the less privileged who, aware of the greatness of their virtue and the pre-eminence of their lineage, desire to commune with their spirits, and to strive to acquire an added insight into the glory of their position, and to follow in their footsteps, let these Testimonies written by Bahá'u'lláh and `Abdu'l-Bahá be their inspiration and guidance in their noble quest. . . ." (Shoghi Effendi 48)

The Greatest Holy Leaf

"He is the Eternal! This is My testimony for her who hath heard My voice and drawn nigh unto Me. Verily, she is a leaf that hath sprung from this preexistent Root. She hath revealed herself in My name and tasted of the sweet savours of My holy, My wondrous pleasure. At one time We gave her to drink from My honeyed Mouth, at another caused her to partake of My mighty, My luminous Kawthar. Upon her rest the glory of My name and the fragrance of My shining robe." (Bahá'u'lláh 49)

"Let these exalted words be thy love-song on the tree of Baha, O thou most holy and resplendent Leaf: 'God, besides Whom is none other God, the Lord of this world and the next!' Verily, We have elevated thee to the rank of one of the most distinguished among thy sex, and granted thee, in My court, a station such as none other woman hath surpassed. Thus have We preferred thee and raised thee above the rest, as a sign of grace from Him Who is the Lord of the throne on high and earth below. We have created thine eyes to behold the light of My countenance, thine ears to hearken unto the melody of My words, thy body to pay homage before My throne. Do thou render thanks unto God, thy Lord, the Lord of all the world.

"How high is the testimony of the Sadratu'l-Muntaha for its leaf; how exalted the witness of the Tree of Life unto its fruit! Through My remembrance of her a fragrance laden with the perfume of musk hath been diffused; well is it with him that hath inhaled it and exclaimed: 'All praise be to Thee, O God, my Lord the most glorious!' How sweet thy presence before Me; how sweet to gaze upon thy face, to bestow upon thee My loving-kindness, to favour thee with My tender care, to make mention of thee in this, My Tablet-a Tablet which I have ordained as a token of My hidden and manifest grace unto thee." (Bahá'u'lláh 50)

"Dear and deeply spiritual sister! At morn and eventide, with the utmost ardour and humility, I supplicate at the Divine Threshold, and offer this, my prayer:

"'Grant, O Thou my God, the Compassionate, that that pure and blessed Leaf may be comforted by Thy sweet savours of holiness and sustained by the reviving breeze of Thy loving care and mercy. Reinforce her spirit with the signs of Thy Kingdom, and gladden her soul with the testimonies of Thy everlasting dominion. Comfort, O my God, her sorrowful heart with the remembrance of Thy face, initiate her into Thy hidden mysteries, and inspire her with the revealed splendours of Thy heavenly light. Manifold are her sorrows, and infinitely grievous her distress. Bestow continually upon her the favour of Thy sustaining grace and, with every fleeting breath, grant her the blessing of Thy bounty. Her hopes and expectations are centred in Thee; open Thou to her face the portals of Thy tender mercies and lead her into the ways of Thy wondrous benevolence. Thou art the Generous, the All-Loving, the Sustainer, the All-Bountiful. . . .'" (`Abdu'l-Bahá 51)

"Moreover, as a further testimony to the majestic unfoldment and progressive consolidation of the stupendous undertaking launched by Bahá'u'lláh on that holy mountain, may be mentioned the selection of a portion of the school property situated in the precincts of the Shrine of The Báb as a permanent resting-place for the Greatest Holy Leaf, the 'well-beloved' sister of `Abdu'l-Bahá, the 'Leaf that hath sprung' from the 'Pre-existent Root,' the 'fragrance' of Bahá'u'lláh's 'shining robe,' elevated by Him to a 'station such as none other woman hath surpassed,' and comparable in rank to those immortal heroines such as Sarah, Asiyih, the Virgin Mary, Fatimih and Tahirih, each of whom has outshone every member of her sex in previous Dispensations." (Shoghi Effendi 52)

The Purest Branch

"In a highly significant prayer, revealed by Bahá'u'lláh in memory of His son-a prayer that exalts his death to the rank of those great acts of atonement associated with Abraham's intended sacrifice of His son, with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the martyrdom of the Imam Husayn -we read the following: 'I have, O my Lord, offered up that which Thou hast given Me, that Thy servants may be quickened, and all that dwell on earth be united.' And, likewise, these prophetic words, addressed to His martyred son: 'Thou art the Trust of God and His Treasure in this Land. Erelong will God reveal through thee that which He hath desired.'" (Shoghi Effendi 53)

"Upon thee, O Branch of God! . . . be the remembrance of God and His praise, and the praise of all that dwell in the Realm of Immortality and of all the denizens of the Kingdom of Names. Happy art thou in that thou hast been faithful to the Covenant of God and His Testament, until Thou didst sacrifice thyself before the face of thy Lord, the Almighty, the Unconstrained. Thou, in truth, hast been wronged, and to this testifieth the Beauty of Him, the Self-Subsisting. Thou didst, in the first days of thy life, bear that which hath caused all things to groan, and made every pillar to tremble. Happy is the one that remembereth thee, and draweth nigh, through thee, unto God, the Creator of the Morn." (Bahá'u'lláh 54)

"Glorified art Thou, O Lord my God! . . . Thou seest me in the hands of Mine enemies, and My son blood-stained before Thy face, O Thou in Whose hands is the kingdom of all names. I have, O my Lord, offered up that which Thou hast given Me, that Thy servants may be quickened and all that dwell on earth be united.

"Blessed art thou, and blessed he that turneth unto thee, and visiteth thy grave, and draweth nigh, through thee, unto God, the Lord of all that was and shall be. . . . I testify that thou didst return in meekness unto thine abode. Great is thy blessedness and the blessedness of them that hold fast unto the hem of thy outspread robe. . . . Thou art, verily, the trust of God and His treasure in this land. Ere long will God reveal through thee that which He hath desired. He, verily, is the truth, the Knower of things unseen. When thou wast laid to rest in the earth, the earth itself trembled in its longing to meet thee. Thus hath it been decreed, and yet the people perceive not. . . . Were We to recount the mysteries of thine ascension, they that are asleep would awaken, and all beings would be set ablaze with the fire of the remembrance of My Name, the Mighty, the Loving." (Bahá'u'lláh 55)

Navvab

"To this same burial-ground, and on the same day the remains of the Purest Branch were interred, was transferred the body of his mother, the saintly Navvab, she to whose dire afflictions, as attested by `Abdu'l-Bahá in a Tablet, the 54th chapter of the Book of Isaiah has, in its entirety, borne witness, whose 'Husband,' in the words of that Prophet, is 'the Lord of Hosts,' whose 'seed shall inherit the Gentiles,' and whom Bahá'u'lláh in His Tablet, has destined to be 'His consort in every one of His worlds.'" (Shoghi Effendi 56)

"Among those who shared His exile was His wife, the saintly Navvab, entitled by Him the 'Most Exalted Leaf,' who, during almost forty years, continued to evince a fortitude, a piety, a devotion and a nobility of soul which earned her from the pen of her Lord the posthumous and unrivalled tribute of having been made His 'perpetual consort in all the worlds of God.'" (Shoghi Effendi 57)

"Concerning the Most Exalted Leaf, the mother of `Abdu'l-Bahá, Bahá'u'lláh has written: 'The first Spirit through which all spirits were revealed, and the first Light by which all lights shone forth, rest upon thee, O Most Exalted Leaf, thou who hast been mentioned in the Crimson Book! Thou art the one whom God created to arise and serve His own Self, and the Manifestation of His Cause, and the Dayspring of His Revelation, and the Dawning-Place of His signs, and the Source of His commandments; and Who so aided thee that thou didst turn with thy whole being unto Him, at a time when His servants and handmaidens had turned away from His Face. . . . Happy art thou, O My handmaiden, and My Leaf, and the one mentioned in My Book, and inscribed by My Pen of Glory in My Scrolls and Tablets. . . . Rejoice thou, at this moment, in the most exalted Station and the All-highest Paradise, and the Abha Horizon, inasmuch as He Who is the Lord of Names hath remembered thee. We bear witness that thou didst attain unto all good, and that God hath so exalted thee, that all honour and glory circled around thee.'" (Bahá'u'lláh 58)

"O faithful ones! Should ye visit the resting-place of the Most Exalted Leaf, who hath ascended unto the Glorious Companion, stand ye and say: 'Salutation and blessing and glory upon thee, O Holy Leaf that hath sprung from the Divine Lote-Tree! I bear witness that thou hast believed in God and in His signs, and answered His Call, and turned unto Him, and held fast unto His cord, and clung to the hem of His grace, and fled thy home in His path, and chosen to live as a stranger, out of love for His presence and in thy longing to serve Him. May God have mercy upon him that draweth nigh unto thee, and remembereth thee through the things which My Pen hath voiced in this, the most great station. We pray God that He may forgive us, and forgive them that have turned unto thee, and grant their desires, and bestow upon them, through His wondrous grace, whatever be their wish. He, verily, is the Bountiful, the Generous. Praise be to God, He Who is the Desire of all worlds, and the Beloved of all who recognize Him.'" (Bahá'u'lláh 59)

International Archives Building

"The design of the international Bahá'í Archives, the first stately Edifice destined to usher in the establishment of the World Administrative Centre of the Faith on Mt. Carmel-the Ark referred to by Bahá'u'lláh in the closing passages of His Tablet of Carmel-has been completed. . . ." (Shoghi Effendi 61)

"As early as 1952, on the eve of the launching of the Guardian's Ten Year Plan of Teaching and Consolidation, which later became known as the 'World Crusade,' he announced to the Bahá'ís, on October 8th, that one of the World Centre's goals would be the 'construction of the International Bahá'í Archives in the neighbourhood of The Báb's Sepulchre.' He later explained that this major undertaking . . . would 'serve as the permanent and befitting repository for the priceless and numerous relics associated with the Twin Founders of the Faith, with the Perfect Exemplar of its teachings and with its heroes, saints and martyrs.'"

"At Naw-Ruz, 1955, the Guardian was able to 'joyfully announce' to the Bahá'í world 'the commencement of the excavation for the foundation of the International Archives heralding the rise of the first edifice destined to inaugurate the establishment of the seat of the World Bahá'í Administrative Order in the Holy Land.'"

". . . the Parthenon . . . was to serve as a pattern for his building. [However] . . . the capitals were to be of the Ionic and not the Doric Order, and above the main entrance, in the tympanum, there was to be a sunburst with the Greatest Name.

"Shoghi Effendi said he wanted [the roof] to be green, the lovely green of verdigris on copper. . . . The same firm, in Utrecht, Holland, which had made the golden tiles for the dome of The Báb's Shrine was engaged to produce the more than 7,000 ridged tiles required for the roof. . . ."

"The Archives Building stands 12 metres high and is 14 metres wide and 32 metres long, has 50 columns and 2 pilasters over 7 metres high and is built throughout of a marble known as Chiampo Paglierino, a very pale beige in colour. This is the same stone, from the Chiampo quarries between Vicenza and Verona, of which the Shrine of The Báb is built."

"In April, 1957, he [the Guardian] was able to inform us that the exterior of the International Archives Building was completed and the roof in place, 'the whole contributing to an unprecedented degree, through its colourfulness, its classic style and graceful proportions, and in conjunction with the stately, golden-crowned Mausoleum rising beyond it, to the unfolding glory of the central institutions of a World Faith nestling in the heart of God's holy mountain.'" (Amatu'l-Bahá Ruhiyyih Khanum 62)

Seat of the Universal House of Justice

"Faced, like the Archives Building, with stone from Italy,* and surrounded by a stately colonnade of sixty Corinthian columns, the seat for the Universal House of Justice will contain, in addition to the council chamber of the House of Justice, a library, a concourse for the reception of pilgrims and dignitaries, storage vaults with air-purification for the preservation of original Tablets and other precious documents, accommodation for the secretariat and the many ancillary services that will be required. Conceived in a style of enduring beauty and majesty, and faced with stone that will weather the centuries, the building in its interior arrangements will be very simple and capable of adaptation in the generations ahead to whatever technological advances will be made by the rapid growth of human knowledge.

"The erection of this building which, comprising five and a half storeys, far surpasses in size and complexity any building at present in existence at the World Centre presents a major challenge to the Bahá'í community, whose resources are already all too meagre in relation to the great tasks that lie before it. But the spirit of sacrifice has been the hallmark of the followers of Bahá'u'lláh of every race and clime and as they unite to raise this second of the great edifices of the Administrative Centre of their Faith they will rejoice at having the inestimable privilege of taking part in a 'vast and irresistible process' which Shoghi Effendi stated is 'unexampled in the spiritual history of mankind'. . . ." (The Universal House of Justice 63)

* It was later decided that the stone would come from Greece and be carved in Italy.

International Teaching Centre Building

The International Teaching Centre Building is the "seat of that institution which is specifically invested with the twin functions of protection and propagation of the Cause of God. The institution itself, referred to by the beloved Guardian in his writings, was established in June 1973, bringing to fruition the work of the Hands of the Cause of God Residing in the Holy Land and providing for the extension into the future of functions with which that body has been endowed." (The Universal House of Justice 65)

Special events were held in January 2001, during the conference of the Continental Counsellors, which Auxiliary Board members were, for the first time, invited to attend, to mark the occupation by the International Teaching Centre of its permanent seat on Mount Carmel. This coincided with the announcement by the Universal House of Justice of the beginning of the fifth epoch of the Formative Age of the Faith.

Centre for the Study of the Texts

"The Centre for the Study of the Texts is the seat of an institution of scholarly research designed to assist the Universal House of Justice in consulting the Sacred Writings, and to prepare translations of, and commentaries on, the authoritative texts of the Faith." (The Universal House of Justice 66)

The building was completed and occupied in 1999. It now houses the Research Department, and is the temporary home of the International Bahá'í Library and other offices.
